Revalidation

Revalidation is the new process that all nurses and midwives in the UK will need to follow to maintain their registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Taking effect from April 2016, revalidation is straightforward and will help you as a nurse or midwife demonstrate that you practise safely and effectively. Kcare Health (working in partnership with Healthcare Licensing Support) will ensure that you can carry on working legally meeting the NMC statutory requirement.

What is Revalidation?

Revalidation is the new process by which nurses and midwives demonstrate that they practice safely. The Nursing and Midwifery Council exists to protect the public. Revalidation will require all registered nurses and midwives to demonstrate that they remain fit to practise. The revalidation cycle for nurses is 3 years. Revalidation is based on the Nursing and Midwifery Code (NMC) and is the mechanism through which nurses and midwives continue to demonstrate that they meet NMC standards. This fitness to practise measurement is necessary for all healthcare professionals.

  • Have had third party confirmation that they are fit to practise

What criteria are required for Revalidation?

  • 450 hours of practice over a 3 year period for nurses and midwives (900 if dual registered nurse/midwife)
  • At least 35 hours of CPD with evidence of reflection (minimum of 20 hours participatory learning; interaction with others), online CPD, workshops/conferences, journal reading, etc.) pertaining to scope of practice
  • To seek practice-related feedback (students, patients, colleagues, carers etc.) and reflect on the outcome
